Estádio do Dragão: How to Visit FC Porto Stadium & Museum

The Estádio do Dragão is the official Porto Football stadium (a.k.a FC Porto), one of Europe’s most successful football clubs. Located in Porto, Portugal, it is not only a must-visit for football fans but also one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Opened in 2003 for the UEFA Euro 2004, the stadium has a capacity of over 50,000 spectators. Its striking modern architecture has made it a symbol of Porto.

It is one of the few stadiums in Portugal classified as UEFA Category 4, meaning it can host major international finals — including the 2021 UEFA Champions League Final.

The name and design of the stadium are inspired by the club’s symbol: the dragon, which appears throughout the venue.

Visiting the Estádio do Dragão and the FC Porto Museum is much more than a football experience. It’s a journey into the history of one of Europe’s greatest clubs and a chance to understand how deeply football is rooted in Porto’s identity.

Whether you're a sports enthusiast or simply want to explore one of Porto’s most impressive buildings, this visit won’t disappoint.

Fun Fact: Messi Made His First-Team Debut Here

Lionel Messi made his first appearance for FC Barcelona’s first team at the Estádio do Dragão.

The match took place on November 16, 2003, during the inaugural friendly game celebrating the opening of the new stadium after the demolition of the old Estádio das Antas.

At just 16 years old, Messi came on in the final minutes under coach Frank Rijkaard and wore the number 14 shirt. Although it was a friendly match, it marked his first appearance with the senior team.
